Crete history Greece

Heraklion is the capital of Crete, situated in the middle of the island’s north coast. Heraklion’s glorious past dates back to 2,000 BC when its harbour welcomed Greece’s lucrative import trade -copper from the Orient, ivory from Syria, gold from Egypt and amber from England. With the traders came new ideas, knowledge and crafts, which were subsequently adopted and developed by the Minoan civilization. The fruits of their labours are still evident today at the world-famous archaeological site at Knossos – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To this day, Heraklion remains a vibrant urban centre. Fuelled by the city’s university students and a steady stream of tourists, its cosmopolitan streets throb with an energy not often found in Greece’s provincial cities.
